An exceptionally kindly, helpful and hospitable librarian of the old school; few could rival him as a letter writer and every recipient felt himself honoured. He was a very active member of both the LAA (later AAL) (Honorary Secretary 1915-1920, Editor of the LA 1902-1904, President 1906-1909 and Honorary Fellow 1916) and of the LA (Honorary Fellow 1938). He published, with G E Roebuck, A primer of library practice for junior assistants (1904, 2nd edition 1914).
